Today is July 2nd — the halfway point of 2026. Half the year is behind you. Half is still ahead. For small business owners, today is one of the most valuable days on the financial calendar. Not because anything is due, but because you still have time to change course if things aren't going the way you planned. Here's a simple end-of-June financial review to do today.
1. Pull Your Profit & Loss Report
If you use QuickBooks, Wave, or any accounting software, run a Profit & Loss (P&L) report for January through June. Look at three numbers: total revenue, total expenses, and net profit. How does this compare to the same period last year? Are you trending up or down?
2. Check Your Cash Flow
Profit and cash flow are not the same thing. You can be profitable on paper and still be struggling to pay bills if your clients are slow to pay. Review your accounts receivable — what's outstanding? Who owes you money, and for how long?
3. Revisit Your Annual Goals
At the start of the year, you may have set a revenue goal, a savings target, or a plan to pay down debt. Where do you stand? If you're behind, that's okay — but now is the time to adjust your plan, not in December.
4. Look Ahead to Q3 and Q4
What's coming in the second half? New contracts, slow seasons, planned expenses, tax payments? Map out July through December at a high level so you're not caught off guard.
5. Consider a Professional Review
Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is sit down with an accountant and talk through your numbers. Not because something is wrong — but because an outside perspective can spot opportunities and risks that are hard to see when you're deep in the day-to-day.
