Mid-Year Financial Checkup: 5 Things to Review Before July

Can you believe we're almost halfway through 2026? Before July sneaks up on you, now is the perfect time to pause and take a good look at where you stand financially. Whether you're an individual trying to stay on budget or a small business owner managing cash flow, a mid-year checkup can save you a lot of stress — and money — come December. Here are 5 things to review right now.

1. Check Your Tax Withholding

Had any big life changes this year — a new job, a raise, a new baby, or a side hustle? Any of these can affect how much tax you owe. Log into the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to see if you're on track or headed for a surprise bill in April. There's still time to adjust.

2. Review Your Budget vs. Reality

We all set intentions in January. Now is the time to see how they're holding up. Pull your last 3 months of bank and credit card statements and compare your actual spending to what you planned. Don't judge yourself — just get honest about where things are so you can course-correct.

3. Check In on Your Business Financials

For small business owners: are your books up to date? Do you know your revenue and expenses for the first half of the year? Now is a great time to run a Profit & Loss report, review outstanding invoices, and make sure you're on track toward your annual goals.

4. Review Your Retirement Contributions

Are you on pace to max out your IRA or 401(k) this year? For 2026, the IRA contribution limit is $7,000 ($8,000 if you're 50+). If you've been putting this off, even increasing your contribution by 1-2% now makes a meaningful difference.

5. Set Goals for the Second Half

What do you want your finances to look like on December 31st? Write it down. Whether it's paying off a credit card, saving for a vacation, or hitting a revenue milestone in your business — the second half of the year is your opportunity to make it happen.
